DNA highly frequently expressed in mesangial cells, and a protein (meg-1) encoded by this DNA. These substances are useful in identifying mesangial cells, detecting abnormalities in mesangial cells, etc. Moreover, the function of mesangial cells is clarified based on the function of the above protein. It is therefore expected that the causes of diseases concerning mesangial cell will be discovered thereby. These substances are also expected as being applicable to the treatment, diagnosis, etc. of diseases concerning mesangial cells.
