Method and device for detecting foreign bodies in a longitudinally moving thread

Light reflected from a running yarn (1) produces signals from a sensor (5) that are evaluated to detect foreign bodies. The signals are compared against predetermined criteria and a yarn cutter (13) is activated when acceptable levels are exceeded. The criteria are set to particularly characterize material that could be removed in subsequent operations.
