The invention relates to a combustion engine with free pistons and hydropneumatic transmission of the mechanical energy. According to the invention, the engine transmits the mechanical energy by means of a hydraulic motor (23) coupled, by a distributor (19) and a regulator (20), to some pneumohydraulic accumulators (21 and 22) provided with pistons (25 and 26), which separate some chambers (a and b) containing a hydraulic liquid and some chambers (c and d) containing a monoatomic gas which is heated/cooled successively in an absorption refrigerating machine (27), whose refrigerating medium circulates through some channels (e and f) for cooling the combustion engine, and through some heat exchangers (30 and 31) which absorb the thermal energy of the burnt gases of the combustion engine.
