PURPOSE: A clothing amount sensing method for a drum type washing machine is provided to relatively precisely sense a clothing amount by measuring a change of rpm for a predetermined time and the accelerating time. CONSTITUTION: A clothing amount sensing method for a drum type washing machine includes the steps of accelerating a motor to a set velocity after beginning the washing operation and measuring a time taken for the acceleration(S21-S23), calculating a change amount of the motor rpm by rotating the motor by the set velocity(S24,S25), and sensing a clothing amount by comparing the calculated acceleration time and the change amount of the motor rpm with respective reference values(S26).
