The invention relates to a process for preparing organic salts of copolymers having carboxylic groups, which may be used as scale and/or corrosion inhibitors, biocides, flocculants, phosphates substitutes in detergent production, consisting in subjecting binary or ternary copolymers of maleic anhydride with vinyl acetate, styrene, methyl methacrylate, N-vinylpyrrolidone and other vinyl or acryl monomers to hydrolysis with water at ambient temperature for 2 to 10 h, thereafter adding aqueous solutions of amine or quaternary ammonium salts, at a molar ratio acid groups: amine groups or ammonium quaternary groups of 1 :1. Clear solutions with suitable concentration are produced for direct practical use.
