PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ascertain the stroke of an internal combustion engine in a short tim by a method wherein, the part to be detected of a first rotary body is situated such that adjoining distances are provided equally to each other, and the part to be detected of a second rotary body is situated such that the orders of two continuous angular distances in one rotation direction are different from each other. SOLUTION: First and second rotary bodies 9 and 10 on crank cam shafts 7 and 8 are situated in linkage with rotational movement of the crank shaft 7. Magnetic protrusions 40a-40h being parts to be detected are formed at equal intervals in a rotation direction on the outer periphery of the first rotary body 9 and meanwhile, magnetic protrusions 42A-42G are formed on the outer periphery of the second rotary body 10 such that the orders of two continuous angular distances are wholly different from each other. Further, a value obtained by multiplying the minimum distance of the secondary rotary body 10 by a rotation ratio between the crank shafts 7 and 8 satisfies a relation that the value is equal to the maximum distance of the first rotary body 9. Further, the first rotary body 9 is situated in a position where the first rotary body is deviated in a rotation direction by a given angleθbased on the crank shaft 7.
