摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an illumination device having bright illumination light the illuminance ratio of which is high while maintaining the parallelism of light beams made incident on a surface to be irradiated regardless of compara tively compact optical system. SOLUTION: This illumination device is constituted as follows. Luminous flux from a light source 1 is separated to the 1st and the 2nd linear polarized luminous flux whose polarized axes are almost orthogonal to each other. Besides, the 1st and the 2nd linear polarized luminous flux are made incident from the incident surface of a rod lens 5, reflected by the inside surface thereof and emitted from the emitting surface thereof. Then, the surface to be irradiated of a liquid crystal panel 9 is irradiated with the emitted luminous flux. The 1st and the 2nd linear polarized luminous flux are made incident from the incident surface of the lens 5 so that the polarized axes thereof are almost orthogonal to the side surface of the lens 5.
