PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine which polarity a peak value belongs to. SOLUTION: The positive pole side of an A.C. signal to be measured is subjected to half-wave rectification by a first half-wave rectifying circuit 13, and its peak value is held by a first peak value hold circuit 16. The negative- pole side of the A.C. signal to be measured is subjected to half-wave rectification by a second half-wave rectifying circuit 14 and inverted by a waveform inverting circuit 15, and its peak value is held by a second peak value hold circuit 17. A control means 19 adds the code of a polarity to which a larger peak value between the two peak values belongs to the peak value and displays it on a display screen 20.
