PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a highly pure linearα-olefin useful as a plasticizer or the like in good productivity by oligomerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst and a specific compound. SOLUTION: (C) Ethylene is oligomerized in the presence of (A) a catalyst for ethylene polymerization and (B) a polycyclic aromatic compound (preferably a bicyclic or tricyclic aromatic compound) to provide the objective linear olefin. Preferably, the component A is a zirconium halide represented by the formula ZrX4 (X is Cl, Br or I), an alkyl aluminum compound represented by the formula AlR1.5Q1.5 (R is a 1-20C alkyl; Q is Cl, Br or I) and/or an alkyl aluminum compound of the formula AlR'aQ'3-a [R' is same as R; Q' is same as Q; (a) is 1-3], and the component B is an unsabstituted or an alkali-substituted polycyclic aromatic compound.
