摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the manufacturing stage and to reduce the manufacturing costs by simplifying the structure of an HPDLC element capable of color display. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element has two periodic structures 16 and 17 between a pair of transparent substrates 12 and 13 having alignment layers 14 and 15 formed on the surfaces thereof respectively. The alignment layers 14 and 15 are divided respectively into two regions corresponding to the two periodic structures, which are rubbed in an orthogonal direction to each other. Each of the two periodic structures has multi-structure consisting of liquid crystal layers and polymer layers and their periodic intervals are different from each other. Liquid crystal molecules in each liquid crystal layer are aligned in the direction parallel to the rubbing direction of the alignment layer. Reflection/transmission of light beams corresponding to two colors are controlled by impressing an electric field on this liquid crystal element.
