PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-calorie fuel oil having a low rubber-swelling capability by setting the kinematic viscosity and sulfur content each at a specified value or lower, the flash point and aniline point each at a specified temperature or lower, and the total calorific value at a specified value or higher. SOLUTION: This fuel oil has a kinematic viscosity at 50 deg.C of 20 deg.C cSt or lower, a sulfur content of 0.3 wt.% or lower, a flash point of 60 deg.C or lower, an aniline point of 40 deg.C or higher, a total calorific value of 9,400 kcal/l or higher, an atomic ratio of carbon/hydrogen of 6.8 or higher, and a residual carbon content in the distillation 10% residue of 1.5 % or lower. The fuel oil is prepared by mixing 25-50 vol.% cracked gas oil, 0-60 vol.% at least one oil selected from among direct desulfurization gas oil, light desulfurization gas oil, desulfurized dewaxed gas oil, etc., 0-25 vol.% at least one oil selected from among straight distillation gas oil, desulfurized gas oil, direct distillation kerosene, desulfurized kerosene, etc., and 0.1-2 vol.% normal-pressure residue, desulfurization residue, etc. Cracked gas oil has high aromatic content and total calorific value. When cracked gas oil subjected to hydrodesulfurization is used, it preferably has a sulfur content of 0.1 wt.% or lower and a density of 0.885 g/ml or higher and is mixed preferably in an amount of 50 vol.% or higher.
