PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a device for retrieval which can improve the retrieval speed and lighten the load on a server computer. SOLUTION: This retrieval device is constituted by equipping a computer 20 which is connected to a network 1 with a document storage means 21, a history storage means 22 which accumulates and stores key words retrieved in the past and computers equipped with document storage means stored with documents containing the key words, a 1st retrieval means 23 which retrieves a document containing an input key word from a computer equipped with a document storage means stored with the document containing the key word when the inputted key word is stored in the history storage means of its computer, a 2nd retrieval means 23 which retrieves a document containing the key word from all computers 20 when the inputted key word is not stored in the history storage means of its computer, and a history update means 22 which accumulated and stores the key word retrieved by the 2nd retrieval means 23 and a computer equipped with a document storage means stored with the document containing the key word in the history storage means of its computer.
