PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method efficiently producing a cyclic olefin based polymer in high productivity by using a catalyst system combining a specific zirconium compound and an alkylaluminoxane. SOLUTION: (C) A cyclic olefin expressed by formula II (R4-R15 are each H, a 1-20C hydrocarbon, a halogen or the like; k is 0 or 1) is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a zirconium compound expressed by formula I (R1-R3 are each H or a 2-10C hydrocarbon; X is a halogen, a 1-10C alkyl or a 1-10C alkoxy; n is 2-4) and (B) an organic aluminumoxy compound (an alkylalminoxane is preferred). The catalyst preferably comprises the component A of 107-102 millimole/liter and the component B of aluminum atom/zirconium compound of 10-100,000 (in the mole ratio).
