PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize the shape and attitude in an image of a complicated hand shape. SOLUTION: A hand image normalization part 11 deletes a wrist area from images having various shapes and attitudes and generates a hand shape image having the direction and size of the hand normalized. A characteristic space calculation part 13 takes an analysis by a characteristic space method and finds a characteristic value and a characteristic vector from the hand shape image. A characteristic space projection part 15 projects the hand shape image on a characteristic space based upon the characteristic vector as a base and finds projection coordinates in the characteristic space. A hand image normalization part 21 deletes the wrist area from the input hand image and generates an input hand shape image having the size and lightness normalized equally to the hand shape image. A characteristic space projection part 22 projects the input hand shape image on the characteristic space based upon the characteristic vector as a base and finds projection coordinates in the characteristic space. A hand shape image selection part 23 compares the projection coordinates and characteristic space projection coordinates to find the hand shape image closest to the input hand shape image. A shape and attitude output part 24 outputs shape information and attitude information of the found closest shape image.
