PURPOSE: Disclosed is a discharge lamp lighting device of high reliability capable of shutting off the current fed to a discharge lamp upon sensing any lamp failure in various form certainly for protection of the lamp and of lighting it up stably at normal times. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with a DC power supply(E), switching elements(Q1,Q2) to produce a high-frequency current by switching the DC current fed from the power supply(E), a discharge lamp load circuit(LAC1) consisting of a series connection of the discharge lamp(La) and a coupling capacitor(C4) and lighting up the discharge lamp(LA) with the high-frequency current produced by the switching elements(Q1,Q2), and a switching element control circuit(IC1) to control the switching elements(Q1,Q2). Any failure in the discharge lamp(LA) is distinguished by sensing the voltage generated in the coupling capacitor(C4), and a protector circuit(NP2) emits a control signal to the control circuit(IC1).
