PURPOSE: To prevent the transmittance of a liquid crystal display element from being decreased due to decrease in a numerical aperture, and reduce cost, by constructing the liquid crystal display element so that pixel electrodes are positioned only on one side of a pixel part on the same substrate, and counter electrodes are positioned only on the other side. CONSTITUTION: On an insulating substrate 1, counter electrodes 4 electrically connected with a scanning signal wiring 1 and a common signal wiring 3 are formed. Here, in pixel part consisting of a video signal wiring 6 and a scanning signal electrode 3 to be formed hereafter, and TFTs which are switching elements formed at the intersections of both wirings, only one counter electrode 4 is formed to be perpendicular to the scanning signal electrode 3 of this pixel part and also closest to one side. By adopting such a structure as a pixel electrode 7 is arranged for one pixel on one side of the pixel part and the counter electrode 4 is on the other side of the pixel part, the numerical aperture is about doubled compared with a conventional structure and becomes 60%. The power consumption of the backlight can also be reduced by half. Or the brightness can be doubled with the same power consumption.
