A thermal recording material having a thermal recording layer containing as an essential ingredient a condensation product obtained from (A) a carboxylic acid ingredient which comprises as an essential ingredient a (poly)4-hydroxybenzoic acid represented by general formula (I) and optionally contains at least either one of a monocarboxylic acid and a dicarboxylic acid and (B) a polyhydric alcohol ingredient which comprises a trihydric or higher alcohol as an essential ingredient and optionally contains a low-molecular weight dihydric alcohol. In formula (I) p is an integer of 0 to 2.
