PURPOSE: A method for servicing ink-jet printer and ink-jet printer head nozzles is provided to address the needs of each ink formulation and individual needs of each print mode available in the specific printer. CONSTITUTION: Print media type and selectable print quality variations are used to determine whether to decap service spit of a print head. In operation, if a next sweep(217) contains the next color(221) in the print head or set thereof, and the next sweep would be greater than a predetermined time interval or number of sweeps since the last firing of that color ink(231) - whether on a page or at a service station - and the last sweep did not fire droplets of the color, a decap service spit(235) of the print head and nozzle firing tracking resist are triggered. Reaching or exceeding a fail-safe time limit(219) similarly triggers a decap service spit of the print head. All service calls spit fire all nozzles, so all timer values are reset whenever at a service spit.
