The method for detecting the presence of breast cancer in a patient comprising detecting and/or quantitating the presence of a mRNA encoding a mammaglobin polypeptide in a sample from the patient, wherein said mammaglobin polypeptide comprises using the reverse transcription method , of said mRNA to obtain cDNA, amplifying the cDNA region by the polymerase chain reaction method using the two primers, complementary to the flanking regions of said c DNA region, and detecting the amplified cDNA region, wherein the elevated concentration of said amplified cDNA region above the concentration for a healthy individual indicates the presence of breast cancer cells. 6.
