PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method and an apparatus, in which kinds of various plastic materials are discriminated at low cost and with precision. SOLUTION: A plastic sample 1 is heated. A gas which is generated when the plastic sample 1 is decomposed thermally, due to its heating is detected by metal oxide semiconductor-type sensors 5, 6. Signals which are outputted from the sensors 5, 6 are compared with an output pattern, which is stored by measuring a standard plastic sample in advance, so as to specify the kind of plastic material.
