PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure sodium lamp lighting device capable of using a small-sized, lightweight, and low-cost ballast for lighting and capable of reducing the price of a lighting system, and to provide a lighting system using the same. SOLUTION: A high-pressure sodium lamp HPS equipped with an ionized medium, substantially not including mercury but including sodium and xenon as light-emitting metal and sealed in a light-transmitting ceramic discharge container CE, and having a lamp voltage of 35-70 V and a rated consumption power of 100 W or less, is lighted by a lagging-type ballast BR connected to an alternating-current power supply AS having a supply voltage 90-120 V. By adapting the inner diameter of the light-transmitting ceramic discharge container CE to be <=6 mm and the distance between electrodes to be <=30 mm, the lamp voltage can be caused to fall within the range of values while xenon can be sealed in at a pressure of 100 to 250 Torr, and therefore the efficiency of the lamp can be enhanced. The lagging-type ballast BR can be mainly composed of a single choke coil SC. |
