PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain consecutive recording/reproducing operation of a series of recording signals by recording the recording signal in the manner of selecting a free area having capacity corresponded to a transfer rate among the free areas dotted over a disk. SOLUTION: In this recorder, positions and capacities of all free areas between the data areas are respectively detected by a system controller 3 based on control data recorded on the disk 1, and when the recording signal is recorded in the free area at the specified transfer rate, discrimination is made whether the series of the recording signals are consecutively recordable/ reproducible or not, based on the time required for seeking the data area, the capacity of a 1st track buffer 10, or the like. Then, the recording signals are recorded by selecting the free area judged as that the consecutive recording/ reproducing operations of the series of the recording signals are allowed. Thus, the series of the recording signals are made to be consecutively recordable and reproducible.
