PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute efficient and effective retrieval processing for picture data having a hierarchical structure. SOLUTION: When a retrieval object picture is designated in a step S21, picture data having the lowest resolution is taken out from the hierarchical structure and is used to calculate a feature quantity in step S22. In a step S23, this feature quantity is used to retrieve a similar picture. In a step 824, the retrieved similar picture is displayed.
