PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the multiplex and/or demultiplex function over at least three wavelengths. SOLUTION: This optical multiplexer and/or demultiplexer comprises at least one central waveguide 4 and two side waveguides 5, 6. Each side waveguide 5, 6 constitutes a pair of waveguides with the central waveguide 4, and each pair is arranged so as to allow both directional evanescent coupling of the wavelengths related to the waveguides of each pair of 4, 5 and 4, 6. The coupling is selective to wavelength, and assisted by at least one etched diffraction grating Λ. The waveguides 4, 5, 6 are constituted so that the multiplexer/demultiplexer has the operation unrelated to the polarized state of an optical signal. |
