PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an image display device whose cost is low and whose contrast ratio is excellent. SOLUTION: Nearly parallel light L1 emitted by a light source 1 is converted into condensed light L2 by a condensing lens 3, and the resultant light passes through a polarizing plate 4 and a multilayer double refraction element 5 and is made incident on a display element 6 in an oblique direction. A polarizing direction of the light is modulated according to image information and the light is then reflected at the display element 6. Reflected light passes through the multilayer double refraction element 5 and the polarizing plate 4 again and reaches a screen by being transmitted through a lens 7, so that an image is displayed. Also, the phase advancing axis of a double refraction element 53 nearest the display element 6 out of the multilayer double refraction element 5 and the orienting direction of liquid crystal are aligned, so that the double refraction element for the compensation of double refraction for the light in the oblique direction is dispensed with. |
