PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a personal authenticating method by which verification is performed adaptively while following a change in the real environment of use without increasing memory capacity/verification time even when the number of times of use is increased. SOLUTION: A criterion provided by collating the body feature of a user with the previously registered body feature of a specified individual is processed and stored in a table. The existent range of values of the criterion and the form of the frequency distribution of the criterion are estimated from the table and when it is discriminated by finding the collation criterion of a newly inputted body feature the body feature belongs to the specified individual, the existent range and the form of the frequency distribution are applied to the criterion. When the criterion is settled within a predetermined normal range, the criterion is suitable and received as the specified individual. When the criterion is out of the normal range, the criterion is not suitable, the possibility of embezzlement is high for the body feature, a use is refused by judging the user is not the specified individual, and countermeasures are taken.
