PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a visible light absorbing layer in a reflection type image display device, having functions for retaining a displayed state of image information, to prevent distortions of an image when the image is seen from an oblique direction and to enable easier production. SOLUTION: An image forming layer 31 of an image display panel 30 contains an infrared absorbing dyestuff and a liquid-crystalline material which causes phase transition accompanied by changes in the reflectance, when it is heated. The infrared absorbing dyestuff sufficiently absorbs visible light or a visible light absorbing dyestuff is added to the infrared absorbing dyestuff if the dyestuff does not sufficiently absorb visible light. When the image forming layer 31 is irradiated with infrared light, the infrared light absorbing dyestuff generates heat, the phase transition of the liquid-crystalline material is caused to change the reflectance and a visible image is formed in the image forming layer 31 and retained.
