PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing adjuster which quickly starts an engine by starting the engine in the middle position between the most delay angle and most advance angle and prevents generation of knocking noise. SOLUTION: A tip face 33b formed on a tip portion 33 of a stopper pin 32 receives delay angle oil pressure from a hydraulic chamber 42. A circular face 34a formed on the fitting hole side in a large diameter sliding portion 34 receives delay angle oil pressure from a hydraulic chamber 45. The delay angle oil pressures the tip face 33b and the circular face 34a receive act in a direction in which the stopper piston 32 is pulled out from the fitting hole 41. A circular face 34b formed on the side opposite to the fitting hole of the large diameter sliding portion 34 receives advance angle oil pressure by a hydraulic chamber 46, when an advance angle hydraulic chamber 54 communicates with the hydraulic chamber 46 via an insertion hole 30b. The oil pressure from the hydraulic chamber 46 acts as a force which presses the stopper piston 32 into a fitting member 40. When the insertion hole 30b is blocked by the large diameter sliding portion 34, the hydraulic chamber 46 acts as a damper chamber.
