PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control a gap or a float height between relatively moving surfaces by making the front edge part and the rear edge pat of a section formed in the intermediate part of an air bearing face not coplanar but displacable from a memory medium. SOLUTION: A read/write head slider 50 extends from a front edge 12 which blocks an air flow between the slider and a rotary medium related to the slider to an opposite rear edge 14. Central parts 54 and 56 of the slider 50 include many substantially flat strips 60 between laterally extending and surface treated sections 62. The strips 60 are substantially coplanar with parts 32, 38 and 40. On the other hand, surface treated sections 62 is displaced inward deeper than parts of the part 32 and leading end parts 38 and 40 of an air bearing face 30. The surface treated sections 62 are formed by selectively removing a material at parts of the central parts 54 and 56 from the air bearing face 30 by, e.g. convergent ion beam etching.
