PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate cylinders and assign each stroke of intake, compression, expansion, and exhaust to the respective cylinders without providing a deceleration mechanism that decelerates a crankshaft rotation speed. SOLUTION: A plurality of cylinders are recognized as a cylinder group when the piston phase is the same. A cylinder group discriminating section 2 in ECU 1 identifies an output pulse train of a cylinder group sensor 9, and discriminates which pistons of cylinder groups fall in the predetermined phase. A cylinder state assigning section 3 assigns strokes of intake, compression, expansion, and exhaust to the respective cylinders based on the cylinder group discriminated by the cylinder group discriminating section 2. A fuel injection control section 4 controls the fuel injection from a fuel injection valve 15 with respect to the intake-stroke cylinder. An ignition timing control section 5 controls a spark discharge from a spark plug 20 with respect to the compression-stroke cylinder. An electromagnetic actuator control section 6 controls electromagnetic actuators 16, 18 to open and close an intake valve 17 and an exhaust valve 19.
