PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal type continuously variable transmission to prevent breakage of a stopper even when the ball of a ball spline is collided with a stopper for pull-off prevention. SOLUTION: Input discs 4, (7) are axially relatively movably and rotatably supported on a rotary shaft 3 through a ball spline 16. Stoppers 18 and 19 comprises retainers 20 and 21 to nip a ball 17 from both sides and be axially slidably situated; and springs 39 and 40 to energize the retainer 20 and 21 toward the ball 17 and hold the ball 17 in a neutral position in a no-load state. When input torque is exerted, the rotary shaft 3 is moved in an X-direction. When the input torque is decreased, the rotary shaft 3 is moved in an Y- direction. The ball 17 is collided with the retainers 20 and 21 but through compression of the springs 39 and 40, an impact is relaxed.
