PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detection system for vehicle that can recognize the positional relationship between a vehicle and an obstacle without giving troubles to the driver of the vehicle. SOLUTION: An operation control part 1 intermittently outputs a transmission signal, and intermittently transmits an ultrasonic pulse signal from an ultrasonic vibrator 4. A reflected wave at an obstacle is received by an ultrasonic vibrator 4. The operation control part 1 is equipped with a judgment means for judging the relative positional relationship between the vehicle and the obstacle according to the relationship between the transmission signal and the output signal of a waveform shaping circuit 6, and a control means for controlling an alert sound being outputted from a report part 7 based on the judgment means by the judgment means. In the control means, a first alert sound for reporting the approach of the obstacle is outputted from the report part 7 when the obstacle is detected by the judgment means, and a second alert sound consisting of a voice message for indicating a direction where the obstacle exists is outputted from the report part 7 while the obstacle is being continuously detected by the judgment means for a fixed period.
