PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To illuminate a screen and to protect the screen part from dust by a single part. SOLUTION: The display device 2 constitutes a portable telephone or the like and has a flat screen 6 which is illuminated by an illumination part 4. The illumination part 4 is formed into a frame, is present along the all sides of the square screen 6 and is disposed on the screen 6 as tightly in contact with the screen. A transparent plate body 8 to protect the screen 6 is disposed on and in contact with the illumination part 4, and the gap between the screen 6 and the plate body 8 is closed on its peripheral part with the illumination part 4 interposed between the screen 6 and the plate body 8. The illumination part 4 consists of an EL element.
