PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst excellent in catalyst activity and catalyst durability by manufacturing a platinum carrying catalyst by carrying platinum on carbon, by adding one or more kinds of base metals in it to form an alloy carrying catalyst, by eluting and removing part of the base metals, then by abutting the alloy carrying catalyst on CO, and further by heat-treating it under an inert atmosphere. SOLUTION: Base metals to be used are preferably selected from elements of the group 8A or group 3B. Preferably, an acid is used as a means for dissolving part of the base metals, the acid is any of phosphoric acid, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, and the dissolving and removing process of the base metals is carried out at a temperature in the range of ordinary temperature to 230 deg.C. The base metals existing on the catalyst surface once alloyed by a heat treatment are partially eluted an removed by using the acid to form vacant lattice point of the base metal on the catalyst surface, CO gas generally having strong affinity to platinum is adsorbed by the platinum existing on the catalyst surface in order to further stabilize the vacant lattice point and a heat treatment is executed in an inert atmosphere again. |
