PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently control the speed of a voice coil motor actuator by repeatedly adjusting the voice coil motor speed until the voice coil motor speed is between a 1st minimum threshold and a 1st maximum threshold, and settling the voice coil motor. SOLUTION: Once the measured voice coil motor(VCM) speed is determined, a VCM driver 16 detects whether the measured VCM speed is between the 1st VCM minimum speed threshold and 1st VCM maximum speed threshold. According to the detected comparison result, the VCM driver 16 enables or disables a VCM speed reducing or increasing current to control the VCM speed to between the maximum speed and minimum speed. The maximum speed threshold and minimum speed threshold can be adjusted matching a safety VCM speed that a user determines so that the head 26 is moved away from a disk platter 20.
