PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make suppressible of a blocking in the heat treatment of a substrate in a rolled state before coating with a silver halide emulsion layer by making a matting agent having a specified average primary particle diameter protrude from the surface of an undercoat layer by a specified height. SOLUTION: The objective substrate for a silver halide photographic sensitive material has an undercoat layer with a matting agent having 0.01-1.6μm, preferably 0.03-1.6μm, further preferably 0.1-1.6μm average primary particle diameter and the matting agent protrudes from the surface of the undercoat layer by >=0.002μm, preferably >=0.02μm protrusion height. The maximum protrusion height depends on the particle diameter of the matting agent but is preferably smaller than the average primary particle diameter of the matting agent. The matting agent is inorganic particles of an inorganic compound such as CaCO3, CaSO4 or ZnS, a multiple metal oxide or the like and the surface of the matting agent may be treated in such a way that a group such as methyl, ethyl or propyl is present on the surface.
