PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve optical characteristics of an optical signal after compensation wen the wavelength dispersion of a WDM optical signal is compensated over a wide wavelength band range by using fiber gratings. SOLUTION: This dispersion compensator 10 is equipped with a transmission line 11, a wavelength demultiplexer 12, and dispersion compensating fiber gratings DCFG1..., DCFGm. Light 5 which is made incident on the wavelength demultiplexer 12 is demultiplexed into light pulses having different wavelengths λ1,..., λm and projected from output terminals of the wavelength demultiplexer 12. Dispersion compensating fiber gratings DCFG1,..., DCFGm are connected in order to the respective output terminals of the wavelength demultiplexer 12. The gratings DCFG1,..., DCFGm are provided having the respective wavelength λ1,..., lm as the center wavelengths of reflected wavelengths. |
