The invention relates to a method for guiding a flat web of material (1). According to said method, the web of material (1) is guided in an arrangement of rotating rollers at a web speed vF. Said web of material (1) is guided over a spreader roller (2) in its edge area. Said spreader roller produces a tensile stress in the crosswise direction, i.e. crosswise to the direction in which the web of material (1) runs. This stress is controlled in a crosswise direction by regulating the peripheral speed vR of the spreader roll (1) and/or by controlling the adjustment angle alpha and/or the contact angle beta between the surface of the spreader roll (3) and the web of material (1). The peripheral speed vR is greater than the web speed vF.
