The aim of the invention is to catalytically reduce the nitrogen content of the waste gases of an internal combustion engine. To this end, the inventive device comprises an exhaust pipe (1) that is linked with one end with at least one waste gas outlet of the internal combustion engine. A reducing agent, especially urea, is introduced into the exhaust pipe (1) by means of a feeder device (3). The inventive device is provided with at least one mixer (2) that is mounted in the exhaust pipe in the direction of flow of the exhaust gas and downstream of the feeder device of the reducing agent. Said mixer (2) has a plurality of channels (9) through which the fluid flows. At least one catalytic converter (7) is mounted downstream of the mixer. At least one diffuser (6) is provided between the mixer (2) and the converter (7) and comprises a plurality of channels (21) through which the waste gas flows, said channels having cross-sections that increase in the direction of flow.
