An optical fiber transmission system utilizes a line switched ring configuration. First, an optical signal is originated, for example by performing an electrical-to-optical conversion or by receiving an optical signal from some place outside the ring. The optical signal is then transmitted toward a destination device via a working optical fiber line. If it is later determined that the optical signal did not reach the destination device, the optical signal is switched, either optically or electrically, to a protection optical fiber. This signal can then be transmitted to the destination device via the protection optical fiber line.
