PURPOSE: A method and a device for encoding digital audio data are provided to decide a variable block for controlling pre-echo by considering block data to be currently processed and data in a pre-block, so as to efficiently control echo and perform high-quality audio data compression. CONSTITUTION: A pre-echo controller divides each block into N domains for data of 3 blocks to form total 3M domains, and forms a predetermined range of domains as variable blocks(100,110). The pre-echo controller calculates peak values of domain data in the formed variable blocks, and peak values of domain data in front of the variable blocks(120,130). The pre-echo controller compares the peak values of the domain data in the variable block with the peak values of the domain data in front of the variable block(140). The pre-echo controller decides whether peak values of the domain data in the variable blocks exceeding the peak values of the domain data in front of the variable blocks as much as a predetermined reference value exist, to vary the size of the variable blocks(150,160).
