<p>A polarized light illuminator (1) in which random polarized light outputted from first and second light sources (101, 102) are separated in direction into two polarized lights by means of a polarization separation optical element (201) thereby to produce three polarized lights the polarization directions of which are perpendicular to each other, part of the polarized lights are returned to the light sources to rotate the polarization directions, and a secondary light source image shifted in the x direction is formed, thus making the polarization directions the same. Without increasing the illumination angle, a polarized light illuminator capable of using both polarized light components is provided even having a plurality of light sources. A projection display capable of projecting an extremely bright projection picture is also provided.</p> |
