Erroneously recognized characters are corrected by using dot character or gray color outputs. A recognized document file is output in dot characters or gray color images (S101). The operator enters correction-use symbols/characters onto this printout (S103). The correction-input document is image-input (S105), and the positions of characters in which recognized correction symbols have been entered are detected (S107), and the entered correction symbols and characters are recognized (S111). The positions of detected characters are keyed to recognized correction symbols (S113), the keyed applicable characters are corrected by correction processing corresponding to correction symbols (115) and the correction results are output (S117).
