The press (1) has a number of longitudinal press frames with upper (3) and lower (4) beams. Heating plates (5) supported as press plates are pressed by working cylinder piston arrangements (7) against additional heating plates (6), with an intermediate pressure balancing pad supporting a press plate (8). The pad is a membrane plate and has a fixed balancing plate between the membrane and heating plates in the cold state. At the pressing temperature the balancing plate forms a fluid pressure cushion with predetermined viscosity and heat conductivity.
