Recording of sporadically occurring errors and faults of tested and configured industrial automation equipment under field conditions requires selective recording of control signals for fault diagnosis and the use of easily transportable equipment which can be set up by unskilled personnel. The error signals are defined and predeterminable interference or disruption is allocated, before a message is generated and sent to a monitoring device, during on-going operation, on occurrence of predeterminable events and states, and in the device (300) to be monitored an error or fault signal is generated with the occurrence of the predetermined interference or disruption. The error signal is then transmitted to the monitoring device (200) and the messages and the error signal are recorded sequentially in the monitoring device (200).
