A reproducing method comprising the steps of adding a detection signal from a first photodetector group to a detection signal from a second photodetector group to generate and output a sum signal to a signal processing section (17; 17'), calculating the difference between the two detection signals to generate and output a difference signal to the signal processing section, generating a binary signal from the sum signal and a binary signal edge pulse at the rise or fall of the binary signal by means of the signal processing section, outputting the binary signal edge pulse as a reproduction edge pulse at the edge of a pit only when a predetermined or higher level of amplitude of the difference signal is detected, and generating reproduction data according to the reproduction edge pulse.
