The invention relates to a method used for the production of a solvent-free a-liponic acid, wherein: a) the alpha -linoleic acid which is to be purified is dissolved in an aqueous alkaline solution or the salt thereof in water, and the pH-value of the alkaline solution is adjusted, b) optionally, the existing solid impurities are separated from the aqueous solution from step a), c), the aqueous solution from step (a) or (b) is adjusted to a pH-value of 1.0 to 5.0 by means of an acid, and d) the alpha -liponic acid thus produced is isolated according to methods known per se. The inventive method makes it possible to obtain an improved chemically purer solvent-free alpha -liponic acid.
