A combustion method and a burner, wherein the same flat-distribution flame temperature as when a furnace length is large can be still maintained even when the furnace length is small to thereby achieve a complete combustion, and a thermal storage burner technique is applicable to even a small furnace length. A combustion air of less than a theoretical air amount or a combustion air of at least a theoretical air amount is injected into a furnace so as to form a jet stream section with a specific surface area larger than that when the same amount is supplied from a round throat, and fuel is sprayed toward this air jet stream so as to be quickly mixed with the air jet stream with a strong turbulence before the fuel loses its velocity energy. Preferably, an air throat (13) may have a flat, rectangular opening (13a).
