Production of a piezoelectric ceramic comprises heating a ceramic mixture to a temperature lying above the melting point of the mixture to make the mixture molten or semi-molten, and cooling and solidifying the mixture to form a grain-orientated ceramic. The ceramic mixture contains a compound with a layered perovskite crystal structure and has ferrroelectric properties at room temperature.
