The production of waterproof coatings, involves a 2-stage process in which: (1) a metal oxide layer is applied to a surface by means of a sol; and (2) alkyl-alkoxy-silanes, preferably alkyl-trialkoxy-silanes, are then attached to the metal oxide layer by condensation reactions.
